Engineering graduate loses Rs. 20 lakh after joining a Telegram group to look for work
On the advice of a friend, the victim, who was looking for work, joined a Telegram channel.
Another instance of cyber fraud included a Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, engineering graduate who lost Rs 20 lakh to con artists. After earning his engineering degree, the victim was trying to find employment. He joined a Telegram group dedicated to helping job seekers connect during their search for employment.
The victim, named K Harshavardhan, is a recent engineering graduate from Vijayawada who is looking for work as a software developer. On the advice of his buddy Krishna Chaitanya Reddy, he joined the Telegram group “Developer Professionals” to find a job lead. The group allegedly gave young people looking for work software jobs.
One day while Harshavardhan was going through the group’s posts, he approached the job sharer, who seemed to be a con artist. In the course of the talk, the con artist proposed to hire him for Rs 20 lakh at LTI Mindtree Limited in Bengaluru.
Harshavardhan deposited the money in stages between July and early August since he was eager to find employment. However, he discovered that he had been conned when he went to LTI Mindtree to pick up his appointment letter. Later, he filed an FIR with the police after reporting the occurrence.

- Do not pay for a job. Genuine employers never demand payment upfront for a position. A warning sign is if a business demands payment for services like job placement, training, or other services.
- Utilize authorized job portals. Maintain your search on trustworthy job marketplaces and websites where employers are screened before posting opportunities. When using social media groups and messaging applications for job searches, exercise caution.
- Never divulge financial or personal details. With potential employers, wait until you have verified their credibility before disclosing critical personal and financial information, such as your bank account information, Aadhar card number, or passport information.
