Pune man lost funds to fraud after investing online ₹18 lakhs to earn a commission.
A 39-year-old man from Pune was the victim of fraud after investing online recently and lost ₹18 lakhs. An unidentified person contacted the victim via social media to offer him a part-time job with the potential for extra income.
Another instance of cybercrime in Pune resulted in a man losing a total of ₹18 lakh to con artists in a fraud after investing online. The victim was duped into spending a significant amount of money on internet assignments so that they might receive a commission. The incident allegedly occurred in the Magarpatta region between May and June of 2023, based on a local news report. The young man was duped into sending away ₹18,70,000 online by cyberthief.
According to a report from Punekarnews, 39-year-old Sharad Gupta was the victim of this scam. Gupta claimed in his complaint that he received a message from an unidentified person on social media who promised him a profitable job doing online assignments for extra cash.
The con artist further gained Gupta’s confidence by providing him with proof of how other people had profited from performing the same duties. Gupta consented to work the part-time job since he believed it to be an authorized program. But as he was working, the con artist also urged him to make investments so that he might profit handsomely from them. Furthermore, the con artist promised lucrative profits and further financial advantages.
Gupta consented to the transaction and ultimately transferred ₹18,70,000 electronically to the con artist’s account over the course of a month. Gupta eventually discovered he had been duped when he stopped receiving any advantages and failed to get his invested money back. He then reported the event to the police, and an official inquiry was started as a result. The participating cybercriminals have been named in a case, and authorities are looking into the situation.
Particularly, this is not the very first instance of an internet fraud in which victims lost money while doing chores online. In Pune and other regions of India, there have been numerous reports of occurrences that are similar.
Scammers frequently prey on those looking for internet income opportunities. They will get in touch with the victim via social media or other online channels and offer them work that entails performing activities online. Simple and innocent chores like liking and subscribing to YouTube videos or following Instagram accounts may be required. However, the con artist would eventually demand money from the victim in order to make more money. The fraudster will vanish after the victim has invested money, and the victim won’t ever see the funds again.
How to Stay Safe?
In the past few months, these frauds have cost hundreds of thousands of people their money. The residents have been warned by the cyber security organizations not to take any online jobs that seem too good to be true.
The public has also been urged by the police to:
- Notified of any call or message from an unidentified number. Any message or call from a phone number you do not know should not be returned, particularly if they demand any of your private data.
- Before accepting a job, check out the website and the position. Verify that the position is authentic and the web page is safe by doing some research.
- Never send money to anyone who seems untrustworthy. Don’t send money to someone you don’t know if you are requested to.
- The police have specifically requested that you not give any sensitive or personal information, such as bank account information, UPI information, Aadhaar information, passwords, or any other documentation that the other party could use to their financial advantage.
