Trump and Musk’s Fireside Conversation Crashes X, Potentially Resulting in a DDoS Attack

Two billionaires who enjoy conversing with themselves, Elon Musk and Donald Trump, were scheduled to engage in a three-hour conversation on social media on Monday night. However, as fate would have it, the platform collapsed, prompting Musk to declare that his cherished X was the victim of a cyberattack.

The two accomplished money magnets, who are renowned for their polarizing gift for speech, were scheduled to commence the live stream on Musk’s X Spaces at 8:00 p.m. Eastern Time on the @realDonaldTrump’s X account.

Users attempted to listen in, anticipating that the two would discuss a wide range of topics, including the forthcoming US presidential election, AI advancements, and election misinformation. However, their efforts were unsuccessful.

The Spaces live stream had garnered 8.4 million views by 8:07 p.m. ET, and numerous X users had reported difficulty accessing the conversation space. The figure increased to more than 17.5 million within a half hour.

Then, at 8:19 p.m., Musk, who was frustrated, finally addressed the issues, alleging that it was a malicious distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack. This type of attack floods a site with traffic, causing it to crash, rather than the millions of users who were attempting to load the Space stream.

“It appears that 𝕏 is the target of a significant DDoS attack,” Musk informed millions of perplexed X users at 8:19 p.m. that he was in the process of shutting it down.

Musk stated, “In the event of a worst-case scenario, we will proceed with a reduced number of live listeners and publish the conversation at a later time.” He did not provide any additional details.

To be clear, Cybernews did investigate the social media accounts of the typical suspects on Telegram to determine whether any of the larger hacktivist organizations had claimed responsibility for a DDoS attack on X. However, we were unable to identify any messages that would have led us to believe that the incident was anything other than an overwhelming number of users attempting to participate simultaneously.

Musk encountered comparable complications in May of last year when X crashed repeatedly for users (including Musk) who attempted to view the livestream campaign launch of Republican Governor of Florida Ron DeSantis, which was also broadcast on Spaces.

Musk had conducted a successful test of the Spaces live stream on Sunday in order to prevent a similar situation. He then advertised the event in a subsequent post that simply stated, “Entertainment guaranteed!”

It has been suggested that Musk, who organized and promoted the discourse on his social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), is a friend of The Donald.

In May, Trump mentioned that he would seriously contemplate appointing Musk as a policy adviser in the Oval Office if he were to secure the presidency in November.

Following the rioting on Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021, Trump was banned from Twitter and has not posted on his X account since.

Musk reinstated Trump’s account in November 2022 following a public referendum; however, Trump has maintained silence on the platform to the present day.

The Republican presidential nominee, who is renowned for managing his own social media accounts, published approximately eight distinct posts on Monday in anticipation of the conversation. Some of these posts were intended to promote the event, while others were intended to serve as political commentary.

“IT WILL BE THE INTERVIEW OF THE CENTURY!” In the early hours of Monday morning, Trump published a message on his X account in all capitals.

The post, which he followed up with his signature “MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN,” garnered 5.6 million views by Monday evening.

The discussion was initiated at around 8:30 p.m.
