A Cyber Fraud A Cyber Fraud of ₹55 Lakhs Hit HAL Kanpur

Cybercriminals deceived Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Kanpur, into sending money to a bogus bank account, resulting in a cyber fraud of ₹55 lakh.

HAL

Hence, the theft of HAL Kanpur Cyber Fraud was discovered when HAL paid last year but did not receive the fighter jet parts that were ordered.

HAL filed a formal complaint at the Cyber Police Station, claiming that the corporation had ordered aircraft parts from PS Engineering Inc., an American company. Cybercriminals used an email address that was very similar to the original to modify transaction data while pretending to be the supplier’s reps.

How the Fraud Unfolded?

HAL frequently purchases aircraft parts from foreign vendors.  The business used the legitimate email address [email protected] to seek a quote from PS Engineering Inc. on May 3, 2024.  The legitimate source gave the required information in response.  However, fraudsters constructed a false email address, [email protected] (with a little misspelling), and contacted HAL executives after allegedly gaining access to HAL’s communications.  They redirected funds into their own account by sending fake payment details while posing as the American provider.

HAL personnel processed the transaction, transferring $63,405 (about ₹55 lakh) to the bogus account because they thought the correspondence was authentic.  Only after the purchased parts never came and the real source did not get the payment was the scam exposed.

Investigation Underway

According to HAL authorities, who suspect a potential email system breach, the scammers were able to precisely time their attack since they had access to private correspondence.  Ashok Kumar Singh, the Additional General Manager of HAL Kanpur, filed a complaint with the Cyber Police when the scam was discovered.

In-charge of the Cyber Police Station  An investigation is in progress, according to Sunil Varma.  IIT Kanpur specialists have been called upon to help find the criminals.  “We’ll catch the criminals soon,” Varma promised.  To stop such thefts, authorities have advised firms to adopt strong cybersecurity measures and stay alert to cyber threats.
