DoT Took A Big Action, Disconnected 24,000+ Mobile Connections Running on 42 IMEI
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) on Friday said it has disconnected 24,228 mobile connections and 42 International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) connections. The department took this action after analyzing 3 mobile numbers identified on micro-blogging platform X (formerly Twitter).
These were suspected to be involved in fraudulent activities. This action was taken on the basis of complaints made by the general public on the government’s Chaksu portal.
The portal allows citizens to report suspicious mobile numbers of fraudulent communications received on calls, messages, WhatsApp, or social media. It was launched in March. It reverifies suspicious numbers. Failing this, the number is disconnected.
Officials said that many mobile numbers found in the recently reported connection cache saw suspicious activity and were disconnected at once. The IMEI number is a 15-digit unique serial number to identify a device. Every mobile phone in the world has it.
DoT officials said they are noticing a worrying trend of thousands of numbers being linked to a handful of devices. One of the 42 IMEIs was used with 4,146 mobile numbers.
Telecom service providers have been directed to block the IMEI across the country, the DoT said. Checking the rising number of spam calls and text messages through various interventions is part of the department’s 100-day agenda.
